A former high school teacher in the US has admitted of having sex with a 16-year-old student while using other students as “lookouts”.

Hailey Clifton-Carmack, 26, a former teacher at Laquey High School in Missouri, was arrested on January 5 after police obtained photographs of scratch marks on the student’s back, leading to an investigation, according to a report by The Mirror.

The alleged incidents occurred between November and December of the previous year.

The single mother of two pleaded guilty on Friday to sexual contact after a plea deal led to the dropping of other charges, including statutory rape, child molestation, and child endangerment.

Court documents have revealed that the pair used students as “lookouts” while the two of them had sex during school hours. Additionally, Clifton-Carmack had also been reprimanded by the school’s administration for being “too close with students” on multiple occasions.

The investigation found that Clifton-Carmack used to wear provocative clothing, including tight or low-cut shirts and leggings, during classes. Detectives also discovered conversations between Clifton-Carmack and the boy on her phone.

Clifton-Carmack was previously married, but her husband filed for divorce in August 2023.

Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney Kevin S. Hillman stated that Clifton-Carmack could face up to four years in prison under Missouri’s Sex Offender Assessment Program. Additionally, she will be under house arrest until her sentencing on October 11, People Magazine reported.

The boy’s father, Mark Creighton, was also initially charged with endangering the welfare of a child after being accused of knowing about the relationship but failing to report it. The father is alleged to have continued shielding Clifton-Carmack and even permitted them to visit his residence while he was present.

According to Hillman, his case remains “on hold” until Clifton-Carmack’s sentencing, as he has “agreed to assist the State and testify if needed”.
