Kangana Ranaut’s highly anticipated film Emergency has made headlines recently due to censor board issues. Originally slated for release on September 6, the film’s premiere had to be postponed as it did not receive approval from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Without this certificate, a film cannot be released in theatres, as is the case with Emergency.
If you’ve watched a movie, you may have noticed a certification displayed on the screen for about ten seconds before the film starts. While many ignore this brief moment, it’s crucial for filmmakers. Getting this certificate from the CBFC is not easy and without it, a movie cannot be legally shown to the public.
The CBFC issues four different types of certifications:
- U (Universal): Films under this category are suitable for all audiences, including children, families, and viewers of any age. These movies contain content that is appropriate for everyone.
- UA (Parental Guidance): Films certified as UA may contain material that is not suitable for children under 12 years old. Children can still watch these films if they are accompanied by parents or guardians.
- A (Adult): This certification is for films that are only suitable for viewers aged 18 and above. These movies may feature adult themes, including violence or mature content, making them inappropriate for younger audiences.
- S (Restricted): Films under this category are meant for a specific audience, such as professionals like doctors. These movies often deal with specialized subjects not intended for the general public.
Apart from the type of certification, the film certificate also includes important information such as the duration of the film, the number of reels, and any changes or cuts required by the CBFC. For filmmakers, obtaining this certificate is a significant part of the process, ensuring their work complies with legal guidelines for public screening.
